Most people are affected by acne at some point in their lives, but its severity can vary greatly from person to person. Most people experience mild to moderate acne breakouts that are cleared easily with over-the-counter products, but for people suffering from more severe acne, the skin can become damaged and irritated very easily. In order to reduce skin damage while fighting off acne-causing bacteria at the same time, it is important to use a few skin-soothing treatments that will effectively clear the skin.

Step 1

Wash your face with a soap formulated for sensitive skin. Wet your face thoroughly with warm water, then lather your hands well with the sensitive-skin soap. After a rich lather is formed, spread it around your skin for one minute, then rinse off the lather with warm water. Repeat twice per day.

Step 2

Apply diluted tea-tree oil to eliminate acne-causing bacteria and to help reduce redness. Fill an empty bottle with 8 oz. of water and add five drops of tea-tree oil into it. Shake the solution well to properly combine the substances. Soak a cotton ball in the solution and spread it around your skin. Let the oil solution dry completely. Repeat twice per day after cleansing.

Step 3

Keep your skin hydrated by applying a lightweight, noncomedogenic oil, such as jojoba oil. Pour three drops of jojoba oil into your palm and rub your hands together to evenly distribute the oil between your hands. Pat the oil lightly onto your skin, covering the area with a thin coat. Repeat twice per day after applying the tea-tree oil.

Tips and Warnings

  • Most commercially produced soaps contain additives that are harsh and can irritate the skin. When the skin is already damaged by acne breakouts, using a chemical soap can exacerbate irritation and can severely inflame the skin. Soaps that are designed for sensitive skin will not contain ingredients that can irritate the skin and will clean the skin without worsening skin damage. Many people use benzoyl peroxide to treat acne breakouts, but people with damaged skin caused by acne will have skin that is more sensitive and delicate than normal. Luckily, the Department of Dermatology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, suggests that tea-tree oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide, but will not irritate the skin. When the skin is properly hydrated, it will be able to heal more easily. Using a lightweight, noncomedogenic oil, such as jojoba oil, will adequately soften the skin to enable it to recover faster from acne damage.
