It is a common misconception that popping a pimple helps get rid of the blemish quicker. Although it can reduce the appearance of the pimple, it can cause bacteria to spread to other areas of the skin, and more pimples can pop up. It also should be avoided, since it can increase your risk of permanent scarring. If you have popped a pimple, continue to treat the blemish to reduce your risk of complications.

Step 1

Wash the face with a mild antibacterial face wash twice a day. This gets rid of any bacteria that may have occurred as a result of popping the pimple. Gently massage the face with clean hands to avoid any further irritation. Wash the skin only twice a day to avoid drying it out.

Step 2

Reduce inflammation with the application of ice on the popped pimple. Place an ice pack wrapped in a washcloth for five to 10 minutes on the blemish. You can repeat the application of the ice several times throughout the day.

Step 3

Apply a topical treatment to the popped pimple. An over-the-counter topical solution that contains 2.5 percent benzoyl peroxide can be used. Choose a spot treatment gel with this formulation and apply it directly to the ruptured cyst. Allow the solution to dry before applying any other skincare products.

Step 4

Use daily moisturizer. The benzoyl peroxide can make your skin flake or feel extremely dry. Apply an oil-free moisturizer to the affected areas of your face. Sun sensitivity is also a common issue with acne treatment products, so choose a moisturizer with built-in SPF 15 or higher.

Things You'll Need

  • Mild cleanser
  • Ice pack
  • Benzoyl peroxide 2.5 gel
  • Oil free moisturizer
