Fibromyalgia is a complex, painful disorder that causes tenderness and pain in the muscles along with extreme fatigue. The disorder is often misunderstood by patients as well as doctors, because there are so many different symptoms associated with it. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, people with fibromyalgia often suffer from digestive problems, headaches, trouble sleeping and difficulty remembering things. While prescription medications are often used to treat the pain of fibromyalgia, supplements may help to ease a variety of different symptoms.

5-HTP

5-HTP, which stands for 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a chemical produced by the body after consuming the amino acid tryptophan. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, 5-HTP can also be supplemented for the purpose of increasing serotonin levels. The University of Maryland Medical Center also states that most people with fibromyalgia have low serotonin levels. Because 5-HTP increases serotonin levels in the brain, it helps to decrease depression, promote healthy sleep and even reduce pain.

Magnesium

Magnesium is a mineral that is found in many foods like whole grains, green vegetables and nuts. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, magnesium is necessary for healthy bones and muscle contractions. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that because people with fibromyalgia often have low levels of magnesium, magnesium may possibly provide some relief of some symptoms. However, the Center also states there is conflicting evidence regarding the effectiveness of magnesium for fibromyalgia.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a component of plants, naturally found in foods like apples and onions, that can be supplemented to improve the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, quercetin reduces inflammation in the body, which may relieve joint stiffness and pain from fibromyalgia.

Astragalus

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, astragalus is an herb that has been used in Chinese medicine for many years to strengthen the immune system and promote energy. The Medical Center states that astragalus has anti-inflammatory qualities; therefore, it may be able to decrease the inflammation of the joints sometimes associated with fibromyalgia. Astragalus is available in capsules or as a topical cream and can be rubbed on to painful areas to decrease inflammation.
