Candida albicans is a fungus which is naturally occurring in the gastrointestinal tract of most humans, yet can cause major problems when it grows too quickly or too much. The Candida Foundation states that people with compromised immune systems, such as those with cancer or AIDS, are most susceptible to an overgrowth of candida. When candida grows too rapidly in the body, it causes yeast infections, depression, fatigue, bloating and constipation, according to the Candida Foundation. Proper nutrition is the best way to fight candida overgrowth, as some foods inhibit the growth of the fungus.
Yogurt
According to the Candida Foundation, yogurt contains probiotics, which are live bacteria such as the Lactobacillus species. Probiotics found in yogurt can restore the body's natural balance and reduce the overgrowth of yeast, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The Medical Center explains that if you take probiotics or eat a food with probiotics at the same time that you take antibiotics, it can negate the candida-promoting effect of the antibiotics.
Propolis Honey
Propolis honey is a combination of bee secretions and natural pine resin. It can be used as a sweetener instead of sugar, and it has several health benefits. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that propolis has antifungal qualities so it can help to get rid of excess candida fungus. The Medical Center explains that propolis has been found to reduce oral thrush, a common side effect of candida overgrowth. Another benefit that propolis honey has over table sugar is that table sugar encourages yeast growth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, while propolis hone does not.
Salmon
Salmon is rich in essential fatty acids, which can help to minimize inflammation thereby improving the immune system function, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. The Medical Center recommends eating fish like salmon as part of a diet to reduce candida growth. Salmon can be grilled or baked or even eaten canned. Salmon also contains calcium, which is a mineral often lacking in the diet of people who have candida overgrowth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Oranges
The Candida Foundation states that fruits, especially organically grown fruits, can be very helpful as part of a diet to reduce candida. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains that vitamin C, naturally present in oranges, can help to reduce inflammation in the body as well as to protect the immune system. Since fungal overgrowth occurs when the immune system function is low, eating oranges can help to prevent candida overgrowth.
