Baseball bases consist of a female anchor that is driven into the ground, into which a male anchor plate, which holds the base pad, is placed. Properly located and installed bases are essential for sanctioned baseball games, and the specific rules about where and how to place bases should be carefully followed. It's also important to remember that each league has different distances from home plate to second base and from base to base. When installing bases, these distances should be known to guarantee proper installation and position.

Step 1

Measure from the apex, or back corner, of home plate straight out over the pitcher's mound to a distance defined by league rules. Mark this location with a wooden stake.

Step 2

Use two tape measures to locate first base. Run one tape from the stake at second base to the first base baseline. Run the other tape from the apex of home plate to the first base area. Drive a stake where the tapes meet at the distance defined by league rules to identify the back corner of first base.

Step 3

Use the two tape measures to locate third base. Run one tape from the stake at second base to the third base baseline. Run the other tape from the apex of home plate to the third base area. Drive a stake where the tapes meet at the distance defined by league rules to identify the back corner of third base.

Step 4

Locate the position for the anchor and drive a female anchor into the ground, carefully, using a sledge hammer or stake driver, until it is flush with the soil level. Insert the male anchor to ensure proper position. Remove the male anchor and replace it with an anchor plug until game time.

Step 5

Install the female anchors for first and third base so that, once installed, the back corner of each male anchor plate aligns with the position of the stake driven earlier and the outer edges of the plate lie along the baselines.

Step 6

Install the center of the female anchor for second base in the position marked by the stake driven earlier. Align the female anchor so that, once installed, one corner of the male anchor plate is pointing toward home plate.
