Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is a prescription medication indicated for the treatment of symptoms associated with erectile dysfunction, a medical condition characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. This medication works by enhancing the effect of a body substance (nitric oxide) involved in muscle relaxation and increased blood flow within the penis during sexual stimulation. The dangers of Viagra should be discussed with your pharmacist or doctor before you begin taking this medication.
Heart Attack
Use of Viagra is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and related cardiovascular events, especially in men who have pre-existing heart-related diseases. This medication works by expanding the blood vessels, thereby increasing the rate of blood flow throughout the body. Physical activity, such as sexual intercourse, can compound this effect, leading to significant stress on the heart muscle. If this occurs during treatment with Viagra, you can experience a heart attack during or immediately following sexual activity. Sudden cardiac death has also been reported in some men due to the use of Viagra. Symptoms of a heart attack in men include chest pain (angina), nausea and dizziness. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends that men who experience such symptoms during Viagra treatment refrain from sexual activity until receiving further guidance from a physician to prevent the occurrence of life-threatening medical complications.
Mini-Stroke
The FDA reports that some men have experienced a mild or mini-stroke (transient ischemic attack; TIA) during treatment with Viagra. A mini-stroke can occur if blood flow to the brain is temporarily blocked by a blood clot. Symptoms of a transient ischemic attack occur suddenly and can include facial or body weakness (especially on one side of the body), decreased coordination, severe headache, vision difficulties or trouble speaking. These dangerous effects of Viagra should be immediately reported to your doctor.
Hearing Loss
Treatment with Viagra can cause temporary hearing loss in some men, reports the FDA. Sudden hearing loss due to Viagra can occur in one or both ears and may be accompanied by abnormal ringing or buzzing sensations within the ears (tinnitus). Contact your doctor immediately if you develop such symptoms during Viagra treatment.
Blindness
While taking Viagra, certain men may experience vision loss as a dangerous side effect of this medication. If this occurs, you may experience double or blurred vision in one or both eyes. Temporary loss of vision (blindness) has also been reported, explains the FDA, which can significantly interfere with your ability to drive or complete work-related responsibilities. Certain men may experience color vision difficulties and may be unable to distinguish between green or blue objects. Report these vision-related effects of Viagra to your doctor immediately.
