Mayo Clinic gastroenterologists warn that people who suffer chronic constipation can overuse laxatives, including Epsom salts. In this case, they run the risk of becoming dependent on them to produce bowel movements. In addition, Epsom salts -- either in generic salt form or in the form of a laxative medication -- can cause side effects that include bloating, gas and diarrhea, according to Mayo Clinic physicians.
Theories/Speculation
Despite the risk of side effects, Epsom salts work effectively as a laxative and are available widely and inexpensively over-the-counter. Epsom salts also can be absorbed through the skin from bath water, and some natural health experts suggest using regular Epsom salt baths to prevent constipation. In this case, they recommend mixing 1 cup or more of bulk Epsom salts into the warm bath water and soaking for 10 to 30 minutes.
