Vytorin is a combination drug (ezetimibe and simvastatin) used in the treatment of hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol) due to dietary factors and for lowering risk of cardiovascular disease. This statin hybrid drug is also effective against high cholesterol due to homozygous and heterozygous traits, considered "inherited" high cholesterol. Vytorin carries serious drug-to-drug side effects; read all package inserts carefully before beginning Vytorin therapy.

Cardiovascular Side Effects

Chest pain has been reported with use of Vytorin medication. If you experience sudden, sharp and sustained chest discomfort, seek immediate medical attention.

Respiratory Side Effects

Patients have reported an increase in upper respiratory infections and cough while taking Vytorin. You may manage mild symptoms with over-the-counter cold and cough remedies, but report serious side effects to your doctor.

Central Nervous System Side Effects

Patients have commonly experienced dizziness, fatigue, headache and overall weakness with use of Vytorin medication. Call your doctor if these symptoms become severe.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

Abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, stomach upset, flatulence, nausea and vomiting are the most often experienced gastrointestinal side effects. These symptoms may be managed with over-the-counter GI medications if mild and intermittent. Should these symptoms become severe, or if vomiting or diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours, it is important to contact your doctor for treatment. Serious electrolyte imbalances may occur and lead to further complications.

Musculoskeletal Side Effects

Joint, back and muscle pain are often reported with Vytorin. Notify your doctor of unusual muscle pain, weakness or tenderness as this may indicate a more serious side effect of rhabdomyolysis, a deterioration of muscle tissue resulting in kidney failure. Ask your doctor for an explanation of possible muscle symptoms.

Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat

Sore throat and sinus infections are sometimes increased during Vytorin therapy.

Hepatic Side Effects

Liver function tests should be performed every few months while taking Vytorin. Statin drugs have been shown to decrease liver function and, in some cases, damage the liver. Talk to your doctor about how often you should have these tests.

Drug to Drug Side Effects

The PDR Nurse's Drug Handbook warns that persons taking diltiazem (Cardizem), verapamil, azithromycin and erythromycin should discuss possible serious drug interactions with their physician before beginning Vytorin therapy.

Drug to Food Side Effects

Grapefruit juice has been shown to increase Vytorin levels in the bloodstream and may increase the risk of myopathy (muscle weakness) and rhabdomyolysis. Do not consume grapefruit juice while taking Vytorin.

Drug to Alcohol Side Effects

Patients on Vytorin who consume alcohol are at high risk for hepatotoxicity (liver toxicity). Do not drink alcohol while using Vytorin.
