Massages without oils can cause friction between your hands and your masseuse's body. The oils themselves often drip or leave a greasy, sticky feeling. Massage lotion provides the benefits of massage oil with the thickness and absorbability of a lotion. This lotion melts easily into your hands without dripping and soothes and moisturizes, too. You can make it at home with easy-to-find ingredients and create a custom product for your clients' tastes or to address sensitive skin and skin allergy problems.
Step 1
Add 1 cup of chamomile flowers and 1 cup of lavender flowers to a small pot with a lid.
Step 2
Pour 2 cups of a mild oil, such as almond or jojoba oil, over the flowers and heat on a low setting until the oil warms, but does not get hot enough to fry the flowers. You should still be able to dip a finger in the oil. Turn off the heat and steep the flowers in the warm oil for 20 minutes or longer, until the oil reaches room temperature.
Step 3
Use a cheesecloth to strain the flowers from the oil and return the oil to the pot. Discard the flowers, or keep them to use in other recipes.
Step 4
Stir in 1 oz. of finely shredded beeswax or small beeswax pellets. Turn heat back to low and stir just until the beeswax melts. Remove the pot from the burner and allow to cool to room temperature again.
Step 5
Add five to 15 drops of essential or fragrance oils to your massage lotion. The amount of oils you add will depend on the strength of the oil and the intensity of fragrance that you're trying to create.
Step 6
Add three to five drops of pure vitamin E oil. Vitamin E oil acts as a natural preservative.
Step 7
Allow the lotion to cool until it reaches the consistency of frosting. Whip the lotion at this point to introduce air to the mixture. This will create a light, creamy lotion that melts with your body heat as your perform the massage.
Tips and Warnings
- Do not add the essential oils to your oil-and-wax mixture until it has cooled to room temperature because high temperatures cause essential oils to dissipate.
