With the advent of so many types of cycling, such as road racing, mountain biking and touring, it became necessary to build different shoes to accommodate the needs of each event. Because the feet are the primary means of propelling the bike over whatever type of terrain necessary, a good shoe that fits the type of activity being done is essential.
Road Racing
Road racing requires endurance and precision. Most road racing shoes are designed with what is known as a clip-in system. Cycling shoes for road racing have an attachment at the ball of the foot that clips to the pedal of the bike, which allows the rider to focus his or her muscles on pedaling rather than keeping the foot on the pedal itself.
There are a variety of types of clips, but it is essential for cyclists to purchase a shoe that is compatible with the type of clip system featured on their bicycle.
Mountain Biking
Clip shoes are sometimes used in mountain biking, but are less common than in road cycling. Shoe manufacturers have developed shoes that meet the rigorous standards required by mountain biking, such as solid grips that allow the rider to move her feet off the pedals and walk. Mountain biking shoes often have some of the same features as hiking boots, such as wide tread and high ankle supports, but with lighter-weight material to help the cyclist perform better.
Touring
Bicycle touring involves covering hundreds of miles each day while packing along all the essentials for touring on your bike. For this, you'll need a comfortable pair of shoes that are also practical when considering how much pedaling you'll be doing.
Touring shoes also come with the option for a clip system, but some riders prefer them without so as to not have to pack extra pairs of shoes because clips can be difficult to walk in.
