Comparing diet aids can be difficult because the weight-loss supplement industry is rife with flashy marketing and persuasive testimonials. It is truly hard to know who to believe when it comes to purchasing a fat burner or diet supplement. Remember that supplements are only meant to speed up weight loss in conjunction with diet and exercise. Diet aids may help weight loss by increasing metabolic rate, suppressing appetite, elevating thyroid output or eliminating unwanted water weight. Follow a few simple guidelines to find that right diet aid for your personal needs.
Stimulants
Check the product to see if it contains stimulants. For those at risk for heart disease, stimulants such as caffeine, synephrine or yohimbe could have serious adverse health effects. If you can use stimulant products, always follow the label exactly to prevent dehydration, nausea or anxiety.
EGCG Green tea
Choose products with proven ingredients such as EGCG, an antioxidant extract from green tea. Around 300 mg of EGCG may help to boost metabolism. EGCG has synergistic effects with caffeine and should be taken on an empty stomach before meals or exercise. Use 200 mg of caffeine when stacking with green tea.
Thyroid Boosters
Look for ingredients that can elevate thyroid output, particularly if you are over the age of 30. The thyroid and its hormones control the body's rate of metabolism, so even a slight boost in output can significantly help with your weight loss goals. Examples of thyroid-boosting supplements are olive leaf extract, 7-keto or Dicana (diiodothyroacetic acid isomers). Those with thyroid disease should not use these products.
Calcium
Choose a product that includes calcium in its formula. Calcium has potent effects on fat burning, according to "The Abs Diet," and can help to inhibit the storage of body fat. In addition, calcium supports bone health and can have a calming effect, especially when taken with magnesium.
Appetite Suppressants
Look for a product with appetite suppressants if you find yourself battling food cravings. Hoodia, garcinia cambogia and 5-HTP can be potent appetite suppressants for some users. In particular, 5-HTP is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin, which has a direct role in the brain's perception of hunger.
Fat-burning Fats
Select a product containing healthy fat-burning fats such as CLA (conjugated linoleic acid), omega-3 or MCT or medium-chain triglycerides. Few products include these potent healthy fats, but they can often be purchased separately to supplement your weight-loss efforts.
