Softball helmets are an important piece of safety equipment in girl's softball. A proper-fitting helmet that meets safety standards can prevent serious head injuries from fast pitches and hard hits. Players in both slowpitch and fastpitch softball are required to wear helmets while batting and running the bases. Some softball leagues also call for an attached mask or guard to protect the face and a chin strap to help hold the helmet in place. Helmets are made from hard plastic or high-impact polymer materials. Choosing the right softball helmet can help keep a player safe.

Step 1

Learn the helmet requirements from your league. Some leagues have strict helmet specifications, and failure to adhere to them may result in removal from a game. Leagues within the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) must use helmets approved by the National Operating Committee of Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE).

Step 2

Select a helmet that fits snug on the head without being too tight. A helmet that is too big will not stay in place and may slip down over the batter's eyes. Softball helmets are available in sizes ranging from extra small to extra large.

Step 3

Select additional features for safety and comfort. Most helmets do not come with a face guard. Some sporting goods stores will install them, or you can purchase a guard to fasten at home. You will also need to purchase a chinstrap that snaps onto each side of the helmet. Try on different helmets in your size to find one that feels comfortable. Players with long hair usually prefer helmets with a hole in the back for a ponytail. Some helmets also have vents that provide air circulation.
