As you age, it is natural for the skin to go through changes. You may start to notice rough patches, fine lines, age spots and wrinkles as early as your 30s and 40s. Starting a good skin-care regimen as early as possible can help keep your skin smooth. If you are unable to obtain smooth skin on your own, you can speak to a plastic surgeon about procedures to improve skin texture, including Botox or collagen injections and laser resurfacing.
Step 1
Exfoliate the skin before cleansing. Wet the face with lukewarm water and use a gentle exfoliating sponge to slough off dead skin cells. Avoid hot water while cleansing, since this can strip the skin of its protective oils.
Step 2
Wash your face with a mild cleanser. Keep your face clean and blemish free by using a mild face wash to remove excess oil and dirt. Wash your face only twice a day to avoid drying out the skin. Look for cleansers that are fragrance free and labeled "non-comedogenic."
Step 3
Apply a moisturizer with a built-in SPF of 15 or higher each morning, to prevent the sun from drying out and damaging the skin. Apply the lotion while the skin is slightly damp to lock in more moisture.
Step 4
Choose a retinol-based night cream to put on before bed. Night creams are heavier and should be massaged into the skin after washing the face. Retinol will help diminish wrinkles and promote collagen production.
Step 5
Use a firming mask each week. Firming masks can help tighten skin and contain a wide range of healthy nutrients for the skin. Choose a brand that contains collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Apply the mask to clean, dry skin and let it set for several minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water.
