Kayaks sometimes roll over, leaving the occupant underwater. It's important to know how to right a capsized kayak before it occurs. One of the most effective techniques is called the Eskimo roll. Each of the steps, practiced correctly, will quickly and efficiently right a capsized kayak. It is important to practice this method with experienced supervision in a controlled location, such as a pool, prior to kayaking in open water. This will help to ensure that if the kayak does capsize, circumstances will not suddenly change from an enjoyable outing to a tragic one.
Step 1
If you feel that you are about to capsize, lean forward, bring your paddle parallel to the side of the kayak, take a deep breath and hold it,
Step 2
Position one blade of the paddle against the underside of the kayak with one hand and extend the other blade into the water away from that side with the other hand, reaching across the kayak to do so. Turn the face of the blade that is away from you downward into the water.
Step 3
Pull the outer blade toward you, smoothly but forcefully, pushing on the water with the blade as you go. At the same time, push the other end of the paddle with your inner arm, using it as a lever. Instead of the outer blade moving through the water, this force will actually begin to right the kayak.
Step 4
Continue this motion. As you begin to break the water, snap your hips toward the side you're leaning toward. This movement will help to flip the kayak under you. Continue pushing with the paddle until the kayak is upright.
