Tavist (clemastine fumarate, also called Tavist-1) is an over-the-counter antihistamine medication indicated for the alleviation of symptoms associated with seasonal allergies or hay fever. This medication is administered orally (tablet or liquid) and should only be taken as directed on the packaging label. In the United States, Tavist production has been discontinued by the manufacturer but you may still be able to find this product in certain pharmacies. Discuss any concerns you have regarding Tavist side effects with your pharmacist before you begin to take this medication.

Drowsiness

After taking a dose of Tavist, you can experience increased drowsiness or fatigue. Such effects can significantly affect your mental alertness and reaction time, which may interfere with your ability to drive or operate machinery. Drowsiness is typically temporary and subsides as this medication wears off.

Dizziness

Certain people can experience episodes of dizziness or lightheadedness after taking a dose of Tavist. If this occurs, you can become unstable when you attempt to stand or walk. Take care when driving or participating in potentially hazardous activities during Tavist treatment, as side effects of dizziness can compromise your normal motor coordination. If you experience dizziness, sit down until this sensation passes to prevent further injury from stumbling or falling.

Increased Mucus

Use of Tavist can increase or thicken mucus within your nasal or respiratory passageways, say health professionals at Drugs, a peer-reviewed informational drug product website. Such side effects may cause you to develop a congested nose or sore throat. You may need to blow your nose more frequently with a tissue to clear thickened or increased mucus from nasal passageways. Mucus within your nose or throat can make it temporarily difficult for you to breathe normally or may cause you to cough. These side effects typically subside with recurrent use.

Excitability

Tavist can cause excitability or nervousness in certain patients--especially children, warns Medline Plus. You may have increased energy or feel restless. Such side effects are temporary and diminish as this medication wears off.

Dry Mouth

You can develop a sensation of dryness within your mouth, throat or nose. This can cause mild irritation of these tissues, which may lead to increased thirst, sore throat or sneezing. These side effects are typically mild and subside after treatment.
