Tenuate (diethylpropion hydrochloride) is a prescription medication used to suppress hunger sensations in patients who need to lose excess body weight. Doctors typically prescribe this medication for a short period; the effectiveness of Tenuate decreases significantly after a few weeks' use. Discuss the potential side effects of Tenuate with your doctor or pharmacist before you begin treatment.

Drowsiness

During treatment with Tenuate, you can experience abnormal episodes of drowsiness or fatigue. Certain patients may experience insomnia, which can lead to symptoms of daytime fatigue. This may make it difficult for you to focus or concentrate while at work or school.

Mood Alterations

Tenuate can cause some patients to experience unusual changes in mood or behavior. You may begin to notice that you feel nervous, restless or anxious. You can also experience episodes of elation (extreme happiness) or depression (extreme sadness), which may affect your interaction with colleagues, friends or family members.

Upset Stomach

After taking this medication, you can experience upset stomach symptoms. Some patients develop abdominal discomfort, which can be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. An unpleasant or bitter taste can also develop.

Dizziness

Treatment with Tenuate can cause dizziness. If this occurs, you may feel lightheaded or experience blurred vision, headache, heart rate abnormalities or increased blood pressure. Speak with your doctor if you experience heart-related side effects. These symptoms can be indicative of alternate medical complications.

Decreased Libido

Certain people can experience decreased sexual drive or desire (libido) as a side effect of Tenuate treatment, say health professionals at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Men who take this medication can experience impotence. Certain men can also experience abnormal breast development or swelling. Women who take this medication may experience menstrual cycle abnormalities, such as a missed period or abnormal vaginal bleeding. Some women may also find it difficult to become sexually aroused or experience orgasm. Discuss the development of these side effects with your doctor for further guidance and care.
