Dark circles and bags under the eyes make you look tired and depressed. While not getting enough sleep can certainly contribute to the dark circles, it's not always the prime cause. You could get plenty of sleep and still look like you stayed up all night. To beat this tired-out look, you can used creams and other treatments to plump up your eyes, reduce puffiness and generally perk up your eye area.
Step 1
Use an over-the-counter eye cream every night. It should contain collagen or alpha hydroxy acids to smooth out your skin, reduce dark pigmentation and decrease puffiness. Of course, you will need to use this cream nightly for several weeks before you notice a change.
Step 2
Get more sleep. Most adults need between 7 and 8 hours of sleep a night in order to be fully rested. For some, sleeping enough will reduce their dark circles and baggy eyes completely.
Step 3
Wrap a few ice cubes in a wash cloth, or soak a wash cloth in ice water, wring it out and place it against your eyes. Hold it, applying slight pressure for 10 minutes. This will cut down the puffiness and brighten up your under eye pigment. If you wake up with dark circles, perform this step to reduce the swelling before you get ready for the day.
Step 4
Use sunscreen below your eyes each day. It should have SPF 15 to provide adequate protection from the sun. Just be careful not to get it in your eyes. Sun damage under the eyes can make the skin appear even darker and can cause premature wrinkles.
Step 5
See a dermatologist to discuss your cosmetic options. If you have pronounced bags beneath your eyes, an eye lift may be your only option to correct the problem. It will take a few weeks for you to recover and for the puffiness to go down, but the results are usually positive.
