Terazonsin is a prescription alpha-blocker medication indicated to alleviate symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia---a medical condition that causes prostate enlargement in men. This medication works by lowering blood pressure and relaxing the muscles within the bladder and prostate, thereby reducing urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Discuss the side effects of terazosin with your doctor prior to treatment initiation.

Dizziness

The most common side effect associated with terazosin use is dizziness. In clinical trials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that approximately 9 percent of patients receiving terazonsin experienced dizziness during treatment. In comparison, approximately 4 percent of patients receiving placebo (a sugar pill) reported similar side effects. Dizziness can be accompanied by headache or blurred vision, which may worsen upon standing or sitting up. Certain people who experience lightheadedness may also faint or lose consciousness due to terazosin treatment. If you experience dizziness or lightheadedness while taking terazonsin, remain seated until this sensation passes to prevent additional injury from tripping or falling.

Weakness

During treatment with terazosin, you can experience muscle weakness or aching---collectively referred to as asthenia---as side effects of this medication. Approximately 7 percent of terazosin-treated patients reported asthenia as a side effect during clinical trials, reports the FDA. Three percent of placebo-treated patients experienced similar side effects. You may find it difficult to walk around or lift certain items while taking terazosin due to these muscle-related side effects. Additional side effects associated with weakness can include back pain or fatigue.

Chest Pain

While taking terazosin, you can experience abnormal heart-related side effects due to this medication. Side effects such as an irregular, pounding heartbeat, dizziness, shortness of breath and chest pain can be serious and should be immediately reported to your doctor.

Swelling

Treatment with this medication can lead to unusual swelling of your hands, legs, ankles or feet. If this occurs, you can develop difficulty walking or driving. Excess fluid retention during terazosin treatment can also cause some patients to experience unintended weight gain. Speak with your doctor if you develop sudden, rapid weight gain or swelling of your extremities, as such side effects may be indicative of heart failure.

Abnormal Sensations

Certain patients experience abnormal sensations with the extremities of the body as a side effect of terazosin treatment. These sensations can cause pain, numbness, tingling or burning within your hands or feet. Such side effects may also be accompanied by swelling, fatigue or weakness.

Impotence

During terazosin treatment, you may experience difficulty maintaining or achieving an erection during sexual stimulation (impotence). Additionally, some men experience decreased sexual drive or desire (libido) while taking terazosin. Discuss these potential side effects with both your intimate partner and your doctor before you begin treatment with this medication.
