Betamethasone is the generic name for the corticosteroid medication sold in the United States as Celestone. It's prescribed typically in the treatment of allergic reactions that may be incapacitating and severe and may be unstoppable in several conditions, including contact dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and asthma, RxList.com says. It may be administered as a syrup in doses of 0.6mg to 7.2mg each day, as an injection or as a pill.
Skin Side Effects
Taking the steroid Celestone can trigger some problems on your skin. For example, it may cause an outbreak of acne. The medication also can cause skin to get thinner than normal and be drier than usual. You may bruise more easily. Your skin also may become discolored, or you may feel abnormal sensations on your skin. These problems are classified as not serious and should be temporary. As you use the medicine more, these problems should go away. Tell your physician if they don't.
Heart Side Effects
Celestone also may produce some problems for your heart. RxList.com says bradycardia or a reduced heart rate may occur when taking this steroid. The drug also may increase blood pressure. Either bradycardia or hypertension can produce such effects as lightheadedness and dizziness, or these common side effects of Celestone may occur without the heart problems.
Abdominal Side Effects
Whichever type of Celestone you take--syrup, pill or shot--you may get common but non-serious side effects that affect your abdominal region and your digestive system. For example, a common, temporary side effect of Celestone is an increase in your appetite beyond what you normally eat. You also may experience indigestion or feel queasy. You may feel stomach pain when you first take the drug.
Body Side Effects
Celestone also may produce non-serious, common side effects affecting other parts of your body. It can, for example, make you sweat more than usual. It can give you a headache and it can make it difficult for you to sleep. You also may be inexplicably nervous.
