Testim (testosterone gel) is a topical hormone replacement medication prescribed to men who have low blood levels of the hormone testosterone. Use of this medication can help alleviate symptoms associated with low testosterone, including depression, impotence, fatigue or decreased bone density or muscle mass. This medication should not be used or handled by women -- especially during pregnancy, as this medication can cause birth defects. Before you begin using Testim, discuss the potential side effects of this medication with your doctor.

Skin Irritation

After using Testim, you mday evelop mild to severe skin irritation at the site of application as a side effect of this medication. Irritation due to Testim use can cause your skin to appear red, inflamed, dry or flaky. You may also develop tenderness or itching sensations at the application site of this medication. Depending on the dosage of Testim used, approximately 2 to 4 percent of men reported application site reactions during clinical trials for this medication, reports the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Certain men may also begin to develop acne on any region of the body. These side effects can be bothersome and should be discussed with your doctor if they become severe. Skin symptoms related to Testim treatment may begin to progressively subside with recurrent use of this medication.

Breast Tissue Changes

Treatment with Testim can alter the level of naturally occurring hormones within your body. This can cause you to experience unusual changes in the tissue of your breasts. Some men may notice swelling or enlargement of the breast tissue, which can be accompanied by breast pain or tenderness. Report such side effects of Testim to your doctor immediately to receive additional guidance and care.

Headache

During Testim use, you may experience a headache as a side effect of this medication. Headache pain is typically mild and can occur within any region of your head. As you continue to use this medication, the frequency of headache symptoms typically subsides.

Libido Changes

You may notice changes in your sexual drive or desire (libido) while using Testim. The hormone testosterone is associated with an increased sexual drive, which can be beneficial for men experiencing a low libido due to disease, medication use or natural aging. Discuss these side effects with your intimate partner and your doctor before you begin applying Testim.

Increased Blood Pressure

Certain men experience increased blood pressure (hypertension) as a side effect of Testim use. An increase in blood pressure can lead to the emergence of additional side effects, including dizziness, headache, blurred vision or nausea. If you have pre-existing hypertension, you should report this information to your doctor before beginning Testim treatment.
