4 Ways to Improve Mental Health

1. Identify Negative Mental Habits and Attitudes

Negative attitudes bring about bad habits that affect your mental health. These habits may have been a part of you for so long that you may have trouble seeing them until they are pointed out by someone else. Negative habits include devaluing your successes and group contributions, arriving at negative conclusions instead of positive ones and having to succeed completely at a task in order to be happy. As you move through your day, recognize when you start to slide into one of these bad habits. By recognizing them, you'll reduce their ability to further affect your mental health.

2. Actively Focus on Positive Thinking

When confronted with a project you're not sure you can do, focus on the skills and abilities you have that will enable you to succeed. Encourage yourself when you do something right, concentrate on the parts of your life that are going well and learn to forgive yourself for not being perfect. Making a habit of thinking positively may be hard at first, but the improvement to your mental health will be noticeable.

3. Practice Deep-Breathing Techniques and Meditation

There are several ways to reduce stress in your life and boost your mental health. The easiest way is through deep breathing. When you begin to feel stressed, breathe in through your nose and let your breath out through your mouth. Doing this even once can reduce stress, but for the best effect, breathe in and out in this manner until you feel calmer.

Meditation is also great for stress relief, as it combines deep breathing with clearing your mind of all the stress-producing events of the day. Setting aside a few minutes to meditate each day has been proven to reduce stress. Meditation has also been shown to improve perception, making it a double threat against poor mental health.

4. Take op Crossword Puzzles or Sudoku as a Hobby

Your mind needs exercise and stimulation just as much as your body does. Take up a hobby that challenges your brain, such as doing crossword puzzles or sudoku. These have the advantage of being readily available and they can be taken anywhere. If you don't care much for puzzles, you can stimulate your mind in several other ways. Taking a class at your local community college, learning a musical instrument or joining a book club can also provide your brain with the exercise it needs to improve your mental health. Regularly stimulating your mind can also improve your memory.
