Dimethicone is a silicone-based compound frequently used in cosmetic products such as lotions and ointments. It is an emollient that moisturizes the skin, making it an effective treatment for dry, itchy or irritated skin. It is also frequently used to prevent skin problems associated with dryness or irritation. Pure dimethicone is also used to treat and dress minor wounds. Dimethicone can be purchased without a prescription in topical gel or aerosol form.
Step 1
Wash your skin with soap prior to dimethicone application.
Step 2
Place a small dab of dimethicone--usually dime-sized or less--onto either your fingers or a dry cotton swab or pad.
Step 3
Gently rub in the dimethicone on the affected area of your skin.
Step 4
Apply aerosol dimethicone by shaking the can prior to use, then holding the nozzle of the can 3 to 6 inches away from the skin. Spray for 2 seconds and let the dimethicone soak into your skin and dry.
Step 5
Repeat this process whenever your skin is irritated or itchy, or as often as your doctor recommends.
Tips and Warnings
- Store dimethicone in a tight container. Place the container in a dark, dry location at room temperature.
- Keep dimethicone away from children. Check with your doctor before using dimethicone if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not ingest dimethicone. Call your doctor if your skin problems worsen after using dimethicone. Do not use on serious burns, bites, deep or open wounds or infections without your doctor's approval.
