Adverse Side Effects of Premarin

Premarin is one of many brand names in the United States for a prescription dosage of estrogen. It may be used in the treatment of several conditions, in both men and women. It primarily is associated with treating conditions in women in which not enough natural estrogen is produced in their bodies. The Mayo Clinic states it may be used to spur the sexual development of girls and to treat such things as atrophic vaginitis, vulvar atrophy, problems with the ovaries, to prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women and other conditions.

Pain

Taking Premarin can induce pain in your body. It may take the form of headaches or occur elsewhere. For example, you may experience pain in your breasts, whether you are a man or a woman taking the medication. Pain in the back also is quite common, as is pain in the joints and in your muscles. The pain can occur in your stomach or throughout your body in a generalized form. You also may get a sore throat when using Premarin. None of these are considered serious and should pass within a short time of beginning Premarin treatment.

Sexual Side Effects

Premarin also may change your interest in sexual relations. It may have the effect of lowering your interest in engaging in sexual behavior, or conversely, may make you more interested in sex than you normally are, Drugs.com states. Either of these side effects should be temporary and are not serious unless they continue.

Skin Side Effects

Estrogen use has the potential to cause a variety of common, nonserious side effects on your skin. You may, for example, develop hives, which are small, red, raised and itchy bumps on your skin. Your skin may become irritated while using Premarin and you may itch, even without hives. You may develop a rash on your skin or your skin may redden.

Heart and Lung Side Effects

Taking Premarin can cause your heart rate to accelerate. This condition, called medical tachycardia, may be scary, but it should be temporary. If it worries you or persists, tell your physician. Premarin also may cause you to experience problems with your breathing such as shortness of breath. This, too, is common but typically temporary. You also may hear a high-pitched noise when you exhale, called wheezing.
