Most banks make it easy for you to apply for a checking account online. It takes just a few minutes to apply for an account and make an initial deposit. Once you open an account, you can perform most of your banking transactions online. In addition to the convenience, many online checking accounts offer customers a number of free services including unlimited check writing, online account access and a free ATM or debit card.
Step 1
Select a bank where you want to open an account. Consider opening an account at a bank that is located near your home or work. Ask family and friends for their recommendations for banks, which offer quality services. Many banks permit you to conduct all or most of your banking transactions online, making it possible to open an account at a leading financial institution that might not be in close proximity to your home.
Step 2
Look for the FDIC logo on the websites of any banks where you want to apply for a checking account. Verify the bank's FDIC status by visiting the official website of the Federal Deposit Insurance Commission (see Resources below). Click on the "Bank Find" option to locate the bank where you are applying.
Step 3
Prepare to enter sensitive information on the application. You will need to provide your social security number, birth date, mailing address and telephone number. In order to protect your personal information, the Federal Trade Commission advises that you put a password on the bank account. Do not create a password that uses easily identifiable information.
Step 4
Have some form of identification on hand when you begin the application process. Bank applications often require that you provide your driver's license number and dates of issue and expiration.
Step 5
Consider other banking options that may be offered along with the checking account. Most checking accounts allow you to obtain a debit or check card. You may also be offered the option to add overdraft protection to your account. Always review the terms of any additional account features before checking the box to add those features.
Step 6
Make an initial deposit to open your new account. Decide whether you want to deposit more than the minimum amount required, as well as how you will make the first deposit. Most banks allow you to use a credit card, transfer money from another bank account or make a deposit at a branch bank.
Step 7
Review all information carefully before submitting your application. Wait for instructions as to what other steps you need to take next in order to open your account. Some online application processes automatically let you know if you have been approved for an account while others may make you wait for a response by mail.
