All the things we do to our hair to make it look beautiful--washing, hot styling, coloring, perming--ironically damage it and make it look unhealthy. Environmental factors and nutritional deficiencies can also lead to brittle, damaged hair that breaks easily. Unfortunately, you can't really "fix" damaged hair. Once it grows out of the scalp, it is dead and cannot be brought back to life. But you can treat the symptoms and repair the appearance of the hair shaft, preventing more damage in the future.
Step 1
Ask a good stylist to give you a haircut that camouflages your damaged hair. In some cases, you may be able to cut off a few inches of the dry, damaged ends and will see a dramatic difference in the health of your hair. In other cases, a more severe cut will be needed.
Step 2
Deep condition the hair on a regular basis. You can do this at home or at a salon.
Step 3
Use a gentle shampoo without harsh chemicals, and try to cut washing down to every other day or every three days.
Step 4
Limit the use of hot styling instruments like curling irons or flat irons.
Step 5
Blow dry your hair on low or medium setting, not high. Dry the hair in the direction of the cuticle, from top to bottom to smooth the hair shaft.
Step 6
Use a conditioner made for damaged hair every time you wash your hair.
Step 7
Use a leave-in styling product made to smooth the hair shaft.
