1. Let go of Your Stress
There are plenty of stress factors that can lead to depression during pregnancy. These include things like financial worries, a rocky relationship with your spouse or partner, lack of support from friends and family, concerns about gaining too much weight or fears about the lifestyle changes a baby will bring. Whatever your causes of stress are, talk about them with a trusted friend or your physician. Take action on those things that can be solved and make a conscious decision to stop worrying about those that cannot.
2. Exercise Regularly
A 2007 study conducted at the Duke University Medical Center found that regular exercise can be just as effective as medication in preventing and curbing depression. Exercise releases endorphins into your system, lightening your mood. Exercise also keeps you healthy, giving you a sense of accomplishment. There are plenty of pregnancy-approved exercise activities, including swimming, light aerobics, brisk walking and yoga.
3. Get an Adequate Amount of Sleep
Several studies have shown a close connection between depression and the lack of sufficient sleep. Pregnancy hormones, heartburn and a basketball-shaped stomach can easily disrupt your sleep from night to night. In order to preserve as much sleep as possible and prevent the possibility of depression, try getting into a regular pattern of going to bed and waking up. You can also try using comfy body pillows, sleeping in semi-upright positions and taking naps when needed.
4. Eat a Healthy Diet
Certain substances like caffeine, alcohol, chocolate and all sorts of refined sugars can sometimes exacerbate the symptoms of depression. Eliminating these and trying to eat a well-balanced, healthy diet can help you avoid depression in some cases.
5. Take Time to Laugh
Laughter often has the same emotional effects as exercise. Having a good laugh has been shown to reduce the amount of stress hormones in your body. Turning on your favorite comedy show or film can be a great way to get you laughing and keep your feelings in check.
