Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms

Hyperactivity disorder symptoms vary from person to person, as there are different hyperactivity disorders as well as different levels of severity. The severity of the disorder in an individual as well as the way she copes with her natural hyperactive tendencies will play a large role in what symptoms she presents. Knowing the more common hyperactivity disorder symptoms will help individuals and parents recognize them, making getting treatment much more straightforward.

Inattention to Detail

Hyperactive disorders do not allow those affected to pay attention to detail the way others do. This results in careless mistakes at work or in school. Those who suffer from an untreated hyperactivity disorder often produce work that appears careless or just unorganized and messy.

Easily Distracted

Being easily distracted is one of the common symptoms of hyperactivity disorder. Those who have these disorders often are distracted by very insignificant things. This can lead to frustration for those around the individual, as they may feel he is not paying attention to what is going on around him. Because he is easily distracted, he also may interrupt quite a bit.

Difficulty Finishing Work

Those with a hyperactivity disorder usually are able to start necessary projects but may have a hard time finishing them. Individuals may have a hard time even starting projects that take a lot of concentration, and they may switch back and forth from several incomplete projects, unable to fully complete any of them.

Forgetfulness

Forgetfulness is one of the most common hyperactivity disorder symptoms--the individual is drawn from one stimulus to another and doesn't necessary retain the information needed. She may forget appointments or forget to complete projects, for example.

Shifts in Conversation

Those who suffer from a hyperactivity disorder often have abrupt shifts in conversation. They may not really listen to others, and their mind may not ever be fully on the conversation occurring in their presence. This symptom can come across as an unwillingness to abide by social standards or customs when really it is an inability to focus on the topic at hand.

Procrastination

Procrastination is a common symptom in those who suffer from a hyperactivity disorder. This occurs because the individual simply cannot concentrate long enough to complete necessary tasks in a timely fashion.
