Tenuate Dospan (diethylpropion) works as a sympathomimetic amine (like an amphetamine) for combating obesity when other weight loss programs have failed. The drug should only be used short term because its appetite suppressing qualities tend to lose effectiveness after a few weeks. The drug works by speeding up your heart rate and increasing your blood pressure. In order to make a weight loss program successful, you must develop a long range diet and exercise plan to pick up where the short range effects of Tenuate Dospan leaves off. This anorectic drug has a number of side effects.
Restlessness, Anxiety
Using Tenuate Dospan can cause you to feel restless and anxious. Drugs.com states you may also become nervous and develop tremors as side effects. Because of the effect the drug has on your central nervous system (CNS) you may tend to feel jittery and over-stimulated.
Dependence
Tenuate Dospan may cause the user to become both physically and psychologically dependent on the drug. RxList.com states the drug is listed as a controlled substance due to the possibility of abuse and dependence. Sudden discontinuation of the drug can cause withdrawal sickness such as nausea, headaches, feverishness and clammy, cold skin. Stopping the drug should be done gradually in order to lessen the possible withdrawal effects.
Dry Mouth
You may develop a problem with extreme dry mouth when using Tenuate Dospan. The Mayo Clinic suggests chewing gum, sugarless candy or chewing ice to help dissipate the feeling of dry mouth. If the dry mouth malady doesn't stop after two weeks, alert your doctor or dentist, because you are more susceptible to dental decay, gum diseases and fungal infections when your mouth doesn't produce a normal amount of saliva.
False Sense of Well-Being
Some dieters who use Tenuate Dospan develop an unrealistic sense of well-being and may take unnecessary risks. Mayo Clinic staff say you may also feel light-headed, dizzy or less alert than usual when using the drug. Avoid driving a car or running machinery when using the drug until you have a better idea how the drug may affect your alertness and responsible reactions to situations encountered while driving or running machinery.
Cardiac Events
Since Tenuate Dospan increases blood pressure, it shouldn't be used with people who have a history of heart problems or already have high blood pressure. RxList.com states even those without histories of cardiac disease may develop hypertension and suffer a heart attack or stroke while using Tenuate Dospan.
