Depression is a mental health disorder that affects a person's ability to concentrate, be successful at work, make and maintain healthy relationships, and feel happy. People who struggle with depression should get help from a licensed mental health professional, but there are other activities that you can do to cope with depression and reduce your symptoms.

Healthy Habits

Many people who struggle with depression don't care enough about themselves to maintain healthy habits. They might feel hopeless and worthless, so they don't shower for a week, eat a gallon of ice cream for dinner and stop exercising. When anyone stops taking care of their basic needs, their level of depression will worsen. Therefore, people suffering from depression need to make every effort to maintain healthy habits to fight depression. You should take a shower or bath on a daily basis even if you don't feel like it, get out and exercise for at least 20 minutes each day, and choose healthy options at most meals. Hold yourself accountable by walking with a coworker during your lunch hour or by taking on the responsibility of walking the family dog each day.

Get Out of the House

When a person is feeling depressed, he shouldn't stay cooped up in the house every day. It will only make matters worse. Instead, he should surround himself with people who love and care about him. Plan ahead to force yourself to get out of the house by setting up a lunch date with a friend each weekend and by planning to meet your brother for a game of golf on Sunday afternoons, for example. When someone's counting on you to show up, you're more likely to do it.
Also, find something new to start doing. Choose something that you've always wanted to do but something you always made excuses for not doing. For instance, you could finally learn how to play the guitar, take Italian cooking classes or join a book club. These activities will help you get out of the house and boost your self-esteem.

Deal With Stress

Everyone has stress. It's a normal part of life; however, people who struggle with depression usually don't cope with stress in healthy ways or try to ignore it altogether, which doesn't work. If you learn how to cope with stress in a healthy manner, you'll be able to reduce symptoms of depression and prevent them from reoccurring. Make a list of five things you can do to prevent stress each day and make a list of five things you can do when you're feeling stressed out. For instance, you might note that you could practice yoga for 15 minutes in the morning or read a book before bed to prevent stress, and you could meditate or take deep breaths to fight stress in the moment. Make copies of these lists and put them in a central location at home and work. Practice daily stress relief and implement something on your second list when you're overwhelmed.
