Dark circles and bags under the eyes are a common concern among both women and men. The skin around the eye is the thinnest and therefore most delicate section of skin on the body. Because skin is so thin, blood vessels can be seen underneath. Depending on genetics, some people's blood vessels are more prominent and the darkness under the eye can just be the vessels showing through. The predisposition to bags under the eye can also be genetically linked. However, there are several reasons why people develop dark circles or bags or both, and most causes can be prevented and treated.

Pigment and Blood Vessels

Dark circles appear for one of two reasons: too much pigment is being produced in the area around the eye or prominent blood vessels lie just underneath the skin. Prominent blood vessels can be inherited. However, since the skin around the eye is thin, increased pigment production will cause the area to become dark, causing dark circles under the eye.

Allergies

Allergies or eye irritation can cause darkness under the eye. Whether it be from an allergic reaction to the seasons, your detergent or from the material of your pillow, allergies can cause your eyes to puff. You can stimulate the area around your eye by dousing it in cold water or gently tapping it. As with any swelling, applying a cold compress will help with puffiness. Use a cold pack or cold spoon and place it on the area of skin below your eye for a few minutes. If your bags are the result of allergies, try taking an antihistamine.

Sun Damage

Too much sun exposure will cause pigment production to increase, similar to getting a tan. To help prevent the appearance of dark circles, protect your eyes from the sun so production of pigment is not stimulated. If your dark circles are bad and can't easily be remedied, see a dermatologist for some options on creams. Also, consult a makeup specialist to help you chose an effective concealer or makeup that will help lighten the area.

Aging

Aging thins the already delicate skin around the eye, causing the blood vessels to show more visibly. In addition, aging causes the already thin skin around the eye to lose its elasticity, which causes underlying fluid and fatty tissue to bulge out and cause drooping skin.

Lifestyle Choices

Poor diet, smoking and lack of sleep are also factors that can contribute to dark coloration under the eye. Reduce salt and sodium from your diet, as these can cause puffiness through water retention. Get plenty of sleep and don't smoke. Restrict your fluid intake before bedtime to help prevent fluid retention. Also, raising your head up on two pillows will allow gravity to work for you to prevent retention.

Thyroid Problem

Sometimes the bags around your eyes can be a sign of a thyroid problem. If the bags appear to be more like round sacks, consult your doctor.
