Tinea of the scalp is also referred to as ringworm of the scalp and is caused by a fungal infection. The condition is most often seen in children and results from contact with an infected person, animal or clothing item. Symptoms of tinea of the scalp include itching, hair loss, lesions and areas of inflammation. You should speak to your doctor if you or a family member has ringworm of the scalp.
Step 1
Allow your doctor to examine the infected area. To ensure that tinea is causing the symptoms, a skin biopsy may be ordered. A small sample of cells are collected from the scalp and examined under a microscope to determine the presence of the ringworm infection.
Step 2
Take an anti-fungal medication as prescribed by your doctor. Tinea of the scalp is treated with oral medications. Griseofulvin is available as a liquid or tablet, while terbinafine hydrochloride is available as granules that can be sprinkled on food. The medications may be required for as long as six weeks to clear up the infection.
Step 3
Purchased a medicated shampoo. The shampoo will contain either ketoconazole or selenium sulfide to combat the symptoms of tinea of the scalp. Over-the-counter and prescription formulations are available.
Step 4
Use the medicated shampoo two to three times a week. The chemicals may irritate the scalp if used more often. On the days you are not using the medicated shampoo, wash your hair with a mild shampoo.
Tips and Warnings
- Remember to wash all clothing items that the infected child has come in contact with. You should also alert the school or daycare center that the child attends of the infection. It is important to finish the entire course of medication, even if your symptoms disappear. Ringworm of the scalp symptoms have a possibility of returning.
