While dry hair is a common problem, you don't have to sit idly by when it happens. There are numerous ways you can treat dry hair in order to enjoy a healthier head of hair.

Step 1

Avoid chemical treatments on your hair. Chemical treatments can wreak havoc on your hair, stripping it of its natural oils and leaving it prone to breakage.

Step 2

Skip blow-drying your hair. If you can, let your hair air-dry. Or use the blow-dryer only for a few minutes to cut out some of the excess moisture and then allow your hair to air-dry the rest of the way. The same goes for straighteners and curling irons, which can damage your hair and cause it to split and break off when used too often.

Step 3

Find a shampoo that's free of alcohol and sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients damage your hair greatly because they are very drying and leave it stripped of moisture. Use natural shampoos instead.

Step 4

Perform an at-home deep-conditioning treatment on your hair. According to Cosmopolitan magazine, mix together a few household ingredients like avocado, olive oil and eggs and then apply it to your hair. You can leave this mixture on for 30 minutes, then shampoo as you would normally. You can do this once a week to restore some moisture back into your hair.

Step 5

Use a hot oil treatment once a week. Buy a kit from your local drug store and follow the package instructions. Be mindful to allow the oil to cool sufficiently before applying it to your scalp to avoid burns. Then work the oil all the way through your hair. After sitting for as long as instructed, rinse out the oil. Your hair will stay shiny and healthier for several days.
