Hair growth occurs in cycles, according to the Hair Loss Learning Center. After approximately three to eight years, the hair on a person's head is no longer in the growth phase. Instead, the hair is shed and the follicle begins to grow a new hair. Certain factors, such as genetics, hormonal changes and an unhealthy diet lacking vitamins and minerals can increase shedding and thinning of hair. Some drugs, medications or diseases can also cause hair thinning. There are specific home remedies that may be able to thicken hair and boost volume.
Vitamins and Minerals
Since hair is a protein, it thrives with a supply of proteins, minerals and vitamins. A daily vitamin supplement containing iron, zinc and Vitamin B6 can be beneficial for thinning hair. Foods rich in calcium, such as milk, yogurt and figs, along with protein such as fish and red meat can provide vitamins and minerals to thinning hair.
Hair Masks and Rinses
Lemon juice can act as an all-natural and thorough cleanser for the hair. It can be applied to hair and left on for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinsed away. A hair rinse made of equal parts apple cider vinegar and sage tea can also improve the health of hair and prevent hair loss.
Chopped hibiscus plants mixed with one cup of coconut oil and heated in the microwave can improve the thickness and body of hair. The hibiscus hair mask can be massaged into the scalp for 15 minutes and then rinsed off.
Scalp Massage
A scalp massage applies pressure to the head, opening up blood vessels and improving circulation to hair follicles. A scalp massage can be performed with the fingertips, beginning at the hairline and moving back in a tight circular motion to the nape of the neck. A few drops of almond or lavender oil can be used with a scalp massage and can add nourishment and moisture to the hair.
Hair Care
Hair loss can occur as a result of excessive handling or improper care. Gentle cleansers and hair products should be used, and unnecessary handling, brushing and styling should be avoided. Hair should also be washed in lukewarm water rather than hot water, which can damage hair and cause it to fall out.
