1. Decide On the Appropriate Type of Care

There are numerous forms of home care available for seniors, from occasional visits to adult day care to full-time care. For seniors who are in relatively good health and can care for themselves well, home care can help provide a respite in everyday activities, such as bringing over meals, helping with daily medications or guiding seniors through their physical therapy exercises. For elderly people who have trouble with mobility or need full-time assistance, live-in care can be arranged with a nurse or a healthcare assistant who is certified in medical issues and can take up the role of a private nurse for the house resident. Keep in mind that each nursing assistant usually takes care of only one person at a time, so an elderly couple living together may require two helpers.

2. Ask the Right Questions

When deciding on a senior home care service, researching your alternatives well in advance can make all the difference. Start by asking for brochures or pamphlets explaining what the service covers and what it doesn't. This will give you a base on which to select a few companies you want to explore further. Find out how long the person or company has been working with seniors and what agencies provided accreditation. This is essential if medical services are expected. When it comes to fees, find out not only the base price but also whether there are extras you must pay for on your own.

3. Choose a Certified Provider

Most home healthcare providers are certified by the state or a private organization. This allows the group to keep a track record through Medicare of the personal background of the provider and to verify credentials, education and experience. When dealing with an agency, find out how the employees are chosen and especially whether background checks are conducted. Be sure to ask for references and follow up on them.
