Lamictal (lamotrigine) is a prescription anticonvulsant medication indicated for the treatment of seizures experienced by patients with epilepsy or Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. This medication can also be used by patients with bipolar disorder to limit the occurrence of mood swings. Lamictal is administered orally (tablet or chewable dispersible tablet) and should be taken only as prescribed by your doctor. Discuss the potential adverse side effects of Lamictal with your pharmacist or doctor prior to beginning treatment with this medication.

Stomach Upset

While receiving treatment with Lamictal, you can develop adverse stomach side effects, which include nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation. Certain patients also experience a burning sensation within the chest or throat (heartburn), which can cause a sore throat or an abnormally sour or bitter taste in the mouth. These adverse side effects of Lamictal are typically mild and can be limited by eating a snack or meal prior to taking this medication.

Blurred Vision

Lamictal can cause adverse vision-related side effects in certain patients. Patients may experience double or blurred vision, which can contribute to additional side effects of dizziness or decreased coordination. You may also notice that your eyes begin to cross, making it difficult for you to see normally. Speak with your doctor if these vision-related side effects of Lamictal persist or become problematic.

Cognitive Difficulties

Certain patients who take Lamictal find it difficult to concentrate or remain attentive while at work or school. They may also experience decreased coordination, which can make it difficult to walk or drive a car.

Mood Changes

Mood changes can occur in certain patients receiving treatment with Lamictal. You may notice that you begin to feel abnormally irritable or nervous. Such side effects can have an impact on your personal and professional relationships and should be discussed with your doctor if they occur.

Sleeping Problems

Treatment with Lamictal can cause sleeping problems to develop as an adverse side effect of this medication. You can find it difficult to fall asleep or stay asleep throughout the night (insomnia). Certain patients can experience increased drowsiness or fatigue during the day while taking this medication. Abnormal or vivid dreams can also cause you to wake frequently throughout the night, which can contribute to side effects of insomnia or fatigue.

Menstrual Changes

Women who take this medication can develop menstrual cycle changes as a side effect of Lamictal treatment. Certain women can experience abnormally painful menstrual periods or may miss a menstrual period. Vaginal irritation, including itching or swelling, can also occur in some women during Lamictal treatment. Speak with your gynecologist for further evaluation and care if you develop any menstrual or vaginal side effects while taking this medication.

Skin Rash

A serious, life-threatening skin rash can develop in certain patients receiving treatment with Lamictal, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) warns. Skin rash side effects typically develop within the first month of treatment but can occur at any time while you are receiving Lamictal. Seek emergency medical care immediately if you develop an abnormal skin rash or any of the following side effects: fever, swelling of the face or mouth, difficulty breathing, jaundice, flu-like symptoms or changes in your heart rate.
