Clearasil produces a number of pimple fighting products, most of which contain one of two active ingredients. The Mayo Clinic recommends over-the-counter acne medication that contains either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, both of which are used in the Clearasil line. Because these ingredients can dry the skin, many Clearasil anti-acne treatments also contain a moisturizing agent, like aloe vera.

Salicylic Acid

Clearasil, along with a number of other manufacturers that specialize in anti-acne products, includes salicylic acid as the active ingredient in its creams and washes. The acid, which is effective on mild forms of acne, removes dead skin cells and debris from the affected area and is recognized by the FDA as an acne-treating ingredient. Products that contain salicylic acid have to be used regularly, as the pores will re-clog without regular application.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is also used in Clearasil products as an active ingredient that fights acne. According to the National Institutes of Health, benzoyl peroxide is especially effective in treating mild to moderate acne. Like salicylic acid, this ingredient removes debris from the affected area and unclogs the pores. Those with easily irritated skin should avoid this ingredient, as it can cause redness and dry patches.

A number of Clearasil products contain aloe vera, which soothes and moisturizes the skin. The acids used as active ingredients in skin care products can dry the skin out, so the aloe counteracts the drying effect and promotes the overall health of the skin.
