Differin® gel (generic name adapalene) is prescribed to treat acne. Applied topically, Differin may appear to aggravate acne during the early weeks of treatment. Benefits from Differin should appear within eight to 12 weeks of continuous treatment. As with all medications, Differin has a number of side effects, most of which are most likely to occur during the first four weeks of treatment. Do not use Differin if you are hypersensitive or allergic to adapalene or any of its ingredients.

Skin Irritation

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, up to 20 percent of patients feel mild to medium burning or see redness immediately after applying Differin to their skin. Up to 40 percent of patients using Differin reported dry skin, itchiness, redness and scaling while using this medication.
The U.S. National Institutes of Health recommends that you gently wash your face with a mild cleanser or non-drying soap twice a day and after heavy exercise. Be sure to remove all dirt and keep your hair clean and pulled back from your face.

Avoid Environmental Irritants

People using Differin find that their skin is more sensitive to the elements. Patients using Differin or adapalene should avoid exposure to sunlight and sunlamps, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Do not use Differin if you have sunburn until your skin is fully recovered. If you usually spend a lot of time in the sun, or if you are especially sensitive to the sun, be cautious when using Differin. Be sure to use sunscreen and wear protective clothing over skin treated by Differin.
Extreme wind and cold can irritate skin treated with Differin. Protect your skin from these elements to avoid further irritation.

Hair Removal

You should also avoid using grooming products that irritate skin, such as hot wax or depilatories to remove unwanted hair. Men should test electric and safety razors to see which is less irritating to their skin. Be sure to shave gently to avoid nicking blemishes.

Drug Interactions

Differin can interact with other medications. You should minimize your use of other potentially irritating skin products such as medicated and abrasive soaps and skin products with a high concentration of alcohol, such as astringents.
Do not use resorcinol, sulfur, or salicylic acid when using Differin. If you are already using products with these ingredients, do not start using Differin until the effects from these products on your skin have subsided.
