1. Avoid Antibiotics
Antibiotics rarely do any good when treating salmonella poisoning. They don't shorten the time you're suffering from the poisoning and might even prolong it by slowing the rate at which your body sheds harmful bacteria. Consult a doctor; he may have some specific kind of antibiotics that he can recommend for your case. Otherwise, keep away from antibiotics while you're still suffering from the symptoms of salmonella.
2. Avoid Eating
This may be the easiest part because the nausea, churning bowels and chronic diarrhea of salmonella poisoning will likely make food the last thing you want to touch. Fasting or an all-liquid diet may help speed up the salmonella's course and get it out of your system more quickly. You can use vitamin supplements if health is a serious concern during a fast. Again, consult your doctor and go forward only if she recommends it. She may be able to suggest some foods that you can subsist on while suffering from salmonella; usually bland, easily digestible foods like soda crackers and applesauce.
3. Drink a Lot of Clear Liquids
Diarrhea and other symptoms of salmonella may lead to dehydration, which is a serious concern. Drink as much water as you can; take small amounts in frequent doses rather than lots of water at once. Clear fruit juices work well too, as do sport drinks like Gatorade, which contain electrolytes that can help restore fluids lost through vomiting or diarrhea. If you can't keep the liquids down, then suck on ice cubes or smaller chips of ice. In a worst-case scenario, consult with your doctor about administering fluids intravenously.
4. Restore Beneficial Bacteria in the Digestive Tract
A healthy digestive system actually contains a number of "good" bacteria that aid and expedite the processing of food. They are likely AWOL during your bout with salmonella. You can replenish them with powder or capsules from your local health food store. Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. bulgaricus and bifidobacterium can all be taken to help restore balance to your digestive system. You might also look for yogurts containing live Lactobacillus acidophilus cultures.
5. Avoid Excessive Heat or Periods in the Sun
The sun can dehydrate you and create other complications. Keep indoors and refrain from any kind of strenuous activity. If the weather is hot, run the air conditioning or soak in a bath of cool water. Wait until you are well and truly over the salmonella poisoning (about 5 to 14 days) before engaging in any outdoor activities.
