Excessive worrying is just one of the many symptoms of anxiety. Depending on the type of anxiety, the symptoms and treatment methods can vary. Sometimes anxiety worsens over time and contributes to trouble sleeping, staying asleep, trouble concentrating, muscle tension and excessive irritability, explains the Mayo Clinic. Medication and psychological counseling (therapy) are two primary methods of treating anxiety. Taking small steps to improve your overall health can help manage anxiety and the symptoms associated with the disorder.

Exercise

Daily exercise can help boost mood and improve overall health. Anxiety and stress can be reduced with physical activity, suggests the Mayo Clinic. Begin small with a simple workout, such as walking, and gradually increase the length and intensity of the exercise over time. Maintaining this exercise routine can have positive effects on anxiety and the symptoms associated with the disorder.

Diet

Improving health through diet can impact anxiety positively. Certain foods, such as high-fat, sugary and processed items are more likely to increase lethargy and negative thoughts. Omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin B are two excellent supplements that can improve brain functioning and provide energy to combat the side effects of anxiety. The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) suggests keeping these type of healthful, energy-boosting foods on hand to prevent hunger.

Practice Relaxation

Learn a new relaxation technique, such as meditation or yoga. These methods are easy to learn. They not only can provide an instant way to cope with anxiety but also help combat other side effects of anxiety, such as sleeplessness. Breathing in a rhythmic pattern and trying to clear the mind are helpful in refocusing the thoughts from those provoking the anxiety to other more soothing thoughts. The ADAA recommends counting to 10 slowly to help push away the anxiousness. Learning to visualize soothing images can help control the intrusive thoughts that cause anxiety, explains the Mayo Clinic. Other relaxation methods can include listening to music or getting a professional massage.

Sleep

Although anxiety can make sleeping difficult, it is important to take time to rest to fight off the effects of anxiety. A few short naps a day can be just the amount of extra sleep needed. Avoid using alcohol or sedatives to sleep, as these can only increase anxiety, warns the Mayo Clinic.

Professional Help

While short-term anxiety can be managed alone, seeking professional help is advisable. Medication and therapy are highly effective in teaching patients how to cope with and manage anxiety. Sometimes an underlying condition, such as a chemical imbalance, is the result of the anxiety. Without professional diagnosis, this condition may go overlooked.

Acceptance

Accept that you cannot be perfect, says the ADAA. Attempting to be good at everything will only lead to more anxiety. Find time to get involved in an activity that makes you happy, such as a charity you are passionate about. Getting away from the typical anxiety triggers can reduce episodes of anxiety. Distraction of any sort can improve anxiety.
