Mountain biking shoes have the ability to improve your efficiency and cycling performance. Shoes specific for mountain biking are designed to transfer more of your power into the pedal and crank. There are two general designs of mountain biking shoes, clipless and nonclipless. Other shoes, such as hiking shoes or an old pair of running shoes, may also work if you are just getting introduced to mountain biking.

Clipless Design

If the primary intent of using mountain bike shoes is to increase your efficiency, then clipless shoes are the best option. These specialty shoes have a metal cleat on the bottom that snaps into a special pedal. Mountain bike shoes can snap into clipless pedals on either side of the pedal, whereas road bike pedals can only be used on one side. The shoes themselves offer a stiff sole that transfers power from your muscles to the bicycle pedal and crank. Some shoes feature cleats that can be adjusted, removed or swapped out for other styles of cleats.

Clipless Features

Clipless mountain bike shoes typically offer deep tread that hides the metal cleat on the bottom. This allows the shoe to grip the trail without slipping in the event you must dismount your bike. Some mountain bike shoe styles feature waterproof, insulated or support designs. Some even feature ankle support and protection, while allowing for optimal power transfer. Most mountain bike shoes use multiple Velcro straps or covered laces to secure the shoe. Even with these features, most mountain bike shoes are lightweight yet rugged.

Nonclipless Features

Some riders prefer not to use the clipless system. Multiple companies manufacture shoes specifically for mountain biking that do not offer clipless systems. The bike should have wide, platform style metal pedals. Originally designed for mountain climbing, these specialty shoes usually offer soles made of a special rubber, capable of gripping the medal pedals securely. These shoes may look like normal hiking shoes or boots. This system allows the rider to come off the bike easily and quickly. In addition, these shoes can be worn anytime.

Comfort Features

Mountain bike shoes offer a wide range of features that determine the usage and price of the shoe. Ideally, shoes should be comfortable for long rides. Furthermore, they should be comfortable on and off the bike. Often times during mountain biking the rider may need to dismount the bike to climb steep hills or carry the bike over obstacles. Therefore, the shoes should allow the rider to dismount easily without falling and permit the rider to walk or run without slipping.
