Constipation can occur due to dietary changes, illness or medications. Difficulty passing waste through regular bowel movements and abdominal tenderness are the main symptoms of constipation. Although there are several over-the-counter remedies such as enemas and laxatives, herbal remedies provide the same relief and are considered a safe alternative. It is always wise to consult with a physician before starting any herbal treatment in order to rule out adverse reactions if taking other herbs or medications for medical conditions.

Step 1

Drink a flaxseed mixture of 1 tsp. flaxseed per eight oz. of water or juice. Flaxseed is a water-soluble fiber that will promote proper digestion and bowel movements while loosening hardened stool.

Step 2

Take one tsp. of senna laxative syrup. Senna is a natural laxative originating from the Middle East. It is used to evacuate the intestines by irritating them and causing cramping. This herb is only meant for short-term use and should not be used for chronic constipation.

Step 3

Take licorice supplements in conjunction with peppermint, ginger and fennel. Licorice increases these herbs' effectiveness when fighting constipation, as well as working as a light laxative itself.

Step 4

Eat herbal laxative-soaked prunes to stimulate bowels to move. Stew 1/2 cup licorice root in 1/2 cup of water for a couple of minutes and remove from heat. Allow to steep for 15 minutes then strain. Soak three stewed prunes in the licorice water for a few hours and eat.

Step 5

Take an herbal laxative containing psyllium. This is the most widely used herb in over-the-counter natural laxatives. To make your own psyllium laxative at home, place 1 tsp. psyllium seed husks in 1 cup warm water and mix well. Add 1 Tbsp. lemon juice and ½ tsp. honey to flavor. Take 2 tsp. before it cools. Repeat this process once daily and drink plenty of water. Water causes the psyllium seeds to swell and work more effectively.
