4 Ways to Choose Foods for the Shangri-La Diet

1. Break Your Food Habits

One of the basic tenets of the Shangri-La Diet is its emphasis on selecting unfamiliar foods and flavors. The diet works by re-setting your set point, which can be defined as the weight your body attempts to maintain. The theory behind the diet is that familiar foods have calorie associations that raise, lower or maintain the set point. This, in turn, determines how hungry someone will be and, thus, how much he will or will not eat. One way of changing the set point is by choosing foods that do not have this association. You can easily accomplish this by trying uncommon foods or drinks as a regular part of a daily diet. For example, if you usually eat beef, then you could try pork or lamb. If potatoes are the norm, try substituting them with broccoli or cauliflower. Diet drinks can be replaced with sugared beverages. Since your body won't associate the new food with calories it has become used to, it will lower its set point, reducing hunger and increasing weight loss.

2. Eat Food with Unusual Flavors

Just as unfamiliar foods can lower the set point, so can foods with unusual flavors. A bounty of foods are available to eat, but even if you're a very adventuresome eater, you'll often return to foods that are familiar. The solution is to alter the flavors of those foods so that your body doesn't recognize them. This prevents your body from associating flavor with calories, which can cause the set point to rise, making you hungrier. Altering flavors doesn't have to be a difficult proposition. Adding different spices, such as garlic powder, basil, paprika, oregano and cumin, while cooking will suffice, just as long as they aren't regularly duplicated. As an alternative, try various prepared ethnic dishes, since these are usually cooked with ingredients and contain lots of unfamiliar flavors.

3. Pick Mildly Flavored Foods

It isn't hard to understand why this step can make a difference in your weight loss. When you pick bland foods to eat, you're less likely to overindulge or become attached to the flavor, and you'll end up eating less as a result. Although the Shangri-La Diet does not require you to limit yourself to certain foods, choosing to eat less flavorful foods can help give you an extra weight-loss boost.

4. Incorporate the Two Ultimate Set-Point-Lowering Foods

In order for the Shangri-La Diet to work, it requires two essential foods: extra light olive oil and sugar water. You should take the olive oil by the spoonful, while you can drink the water and sugar combination either hot or cold. These foods, which you should take at least an hour before or after a meal, enable your body to lower its set point, which leads to reduced appetite and weight loss. You can choose to take either olive oil or sugar water or both.
