Benign prostastatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate, is a common condition primarily affecting older men. Mayo Clinic notes that, if left untreated, prostate problems can cause frequent urination and may damage the kidneys and bladder. Fortunately, several herbal products have been found to be safe and effective as treatments for prostate gland enlargement. These products are generally regarded as safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are associated with few side effects. Pygeum, nettle and saw palmetto are widely available without a prescription; some products contain all three herbs in a single combination.
Pygeum
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports that "strong scientific evidence" supports the use of pygeum, an herb originating in Africa, as a treatment for symptoms of prostate swelling. NIH cites several peer-reviewed studies confirming pygeum's beneficial effects. Most notably, pygeum helps to reduce urinary frequency associated with prostate problems. Some practitioners also recommend pygeum as a complementary treatment for prostate cancer; however, no studies have investigated its efficacy in this regard.
Nettle
Traditionally used as a treatment for allergy-related inflammation, nettle leaf may also help to support prostate health. Several popular prostate formulas, including Prostalex, contain a combination of nettle leaf and other medicinal herbs. According to the NIH, nettel appears to work in synergy with pygeum as a treatment for the symptoms of prostate swelling.
Saw Palmetto
A highly effective treatment for prostate swelling, saw palmetto remains the primary ingredient in many prostate-supporting herbal formulas. The NIH states that saw palmetto is as effective as the prescription drug finasteride (Proscar) and causes fewer side effects. Saw palmetto reduces urinary frequency and improves the flow or urine through the urethra. Additionally, preliminary evidence suggests that saw palmetto can improve hair growth in men with male pattern baldness.
