Dandruff is a common scalp condition characterized by flaking, itching and redness. It is not usually a serious ailment but it can be embarrassing when the flakes appear in the hair and on the clothes. Treatment is sometimes easy but persistent dandruff cases may be difficult to treat. Over-the-counter medicated shampoo options are quite effective in treating mild to moderate cases. There are a number of ways to treat dandruff at home without the use of medications, including foods found in the kitchen.
Oatmeal
Colloidal (powdery) oatmeal can be mixed with water to form a paste to be applied to the scalp. Gently massaging the paste into the scalp can help slough off the dry scalp scales as well as soothe any irritation. This method can be repeated daily if needed, as the oatmeal is mild. Combing the scalp with a fine-toothed comb can remove even more flakes.
Reduce Irritation
Several things can irritate the scalp and exacerbate or cause dandruff. This includes hot showers, infrequent shampooing and harsh chemicals, such as styling products. Evaluate the products used on your hair. Select products that are alcohol- and fragrance-free to reduce scalp irritation. Hydrating hair products can help restore moisture to the hair and the scalp. Daily shampooing of the hair can help remove the irritating products. But the Mayo Clinic also points out that daily showering can remove oil from the hair and scalp, which can contribute to dandruff. The clinic also suggests reducing the number of different styling products used. Once the dandruff trigger has been identified, it can be avoided to reduce recurrent flaking and discomfort.
Warm Oil Treatment
Olive oil, vegetable oil and almond oil can be used to treat the scalp to help slough off scales and provide moisture. The vial of oil can be warmed by placing it in a bowl of warm water for 10 to 15 minutes. The warm oil can then be poured over the scalp and covered with a shower cap or plastic wrap over night. In the morning, the oil can be shampooed out of the hair with a mild cleansing shampoo, followed by a hair conditioner treatment.
