Nearly everyone would like to improve their life in one way or another. Perhaps you would like to become more optimistic or stop worrying so much. Maybe low self-esteem is getting in the way of living a fuller life. Sometimes it can be hard to know how to begin to turn things around. Some basic tips may help put you on the right track for better living.
Present Moment
Your thoughts may be getting in the way of a better life. Maybe you have been beating yourself up about past decisions or obsessing about the future. A better life often starts with making a decision to live in the present moment. Eleanor Roosevelt may have summed it up best when she said, “Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift.” Keep in mind that the present is indeed, a present.
Acceptance
“Happiness is a function of accepting what is,” according to Werner Erhard. There will always be people, places and things in your life that you will have no power to change. You can reduce your frustration and stress level by learning to let go of the things you have no control over. Stop spinning your wheels and start putting all that wasted energy into something positive.
Stop Criticizing
Pointing out the flaws of others is doing absolutely nothing to improve the quality of your life. Richard Carlson pointed out that “when we criticize another person, it says nothing about that person; it merely says something about our own need to be critical.” Striving to find the best in others is a positive step toward living a better life.
Start Giving
A better life may include spending time volunteering or simply helping someone who may be less fortunate than yourself. Freely giving to others with no strings attached can boost your sense of self-worth and give you a better perspective of the things you have to be grateful for. Winston Churchill eloquently noted, “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give."
Connect
While everyone needs periods of solitude from time to time to regroup and rejuvenate, don’t spend too much time isolating. Al Joaquin said: "Isolation is a dream killer." Spending quality time with your friends, family and significant other can make your life richer and fuller.
Be Kind
Mark Twain observed that “kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Kindness encompasses far more than a physical act on behalf of another. An act of kindness can be expressed by an empathetic attitude, an understanding expression or a gentle touch. A kind way of life also means that you also treat yourself with compassion.
