Peeling skin often follows a sunburn, especially a severe burn. Since it takes approximately 12 to 24 hours after sun exposure to know the severity of a burn, peeling usually does not occur for a couple of days. As unsightly and uncomfortable as the peeling may be, it is the body's way of shedding damaged skin and leaving behind lighter, unburned skin. There are things you can do at home to reduce peeling and provide relief.
Step 1
Use aloe vera on the affected area. It has moisturizing properties that will reduce peeling and provide comfort and cooling to the burn. You can use an aloe vera lotion or rub the leaves from an aloe vera plant directly onto the burn.
Step 2
Use a moisturizer several times a day. Choose one that does not contain alcohol or oil, as these can dry the skin.
Step 3
Wear loose-fitting clothes until the burn is healed and the skin is no longer peeling. Tight clothes can irritate the skin, causing it to peel more.
Step 4
Take a bath in cool water to soothe the skin or apply an ice pack to the affected area for 20 minutes. This will reduce peeling and provide relief from the stinging of the burn.
Step 5
Pat your skin dry after a shower or bath instead of rubbing it dry with a towel. Rubbing can cause more peeling.
Step 6
Apply sunscreen before going outside in the sun. This will protect the already damaged skin from further burns.
