You may have noticed that people don't stand as close to you as they used to. Or perhaps you thought you smelled something and had the awful realization that it was you. From social to intimate settings, body odor can create an awkward situation. Since it affects so many different aspects of your life, it's imperative to eliminate it as soon as possible. These unpleasant odors can be the result of anything from poor hygiene to diet.
Step 1
Wear clean clothes every day. After you bathe, make sure to put on a fresh set of clothes. Opt for light-colored cotton clothing that fits loosely to allow air to circulate around your body rather than tight clothes that can trap odors in. Dark clothing absorbs rather than reflects heat, and can cause you to sweat. If your clothing has absorbed the unpleasant smell of body odor, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle when you wash your clothes.
Step 2
Bathe daily. Focus especially on your feet, underarms and genital areas. Use an antibacterial soap to help get rid of bacteria on your body which can contribute to odor. If odors are particularly strong, add 2 cups of tomato juice to your bath water and soak for 10 to 15 minutes before rinsing off.
Step 3
Stay cool. The less you sweat, the less of a chance that the perspiration will mingle with the bacteria on your body and cause an odor. Carry baby wipes with you to wipe sweat away when you're in a warm area or a stressful situation.
Step 4
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Six to eight glasses daily can keep your body hydrated and cool. Proper hydration can also help your body to flush away toxins that may contribute to odors.
Step 5
Wear an antiperspirant instead of a deodorant as this can help to prevent excess sweating. If you tend to sweat a lot, apply baby powder or baking soda under your arms with your hands before you put on your shirt. The baby powder or baking soda will help to absorb moisture and odors.
Tips and Warnings
- Avoid foods with pungent odors such as garlic and exotic spices. Opt for fresh fruits, lean meats and vegetables.
- If body odor persists and nothing seems to help, talk to your doctor. Some medications and medical conditions can cause an odor, but only your doctor can determine that.
