Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium) is a statin drug that works on lowering your blood cholesterol levels. This medication will help to lower your bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise your good cholesterol (HDL). Lipitor may be recommended along with diet and lifestyle modification for maintaining a healthy serum cholesterol. There are some side effects of Lipitor that you should be aware of.

Nausea, Diarrhea and Constipation

Some patients have reported nausea, diarrhea and constipation while taking Lipitor. You may be more likely to experience these side effects if you have a history of gastrointestinal illness. It is possible that these side effects may diminish over time as your body gets used to Lipitor. Taking your statin medication in the evening with a meal can reduce digestive side effects, the Mayo Clinic reports.

Skin Rash or Flushing

You may experience a rash or flushing of the skin while on Lipitor. If you take Lipitor in conjunction with niacin, you are more likely to experience these side effects. If you develop a rash or flushing of the skin, contact your health care provider.

Muscle Pain and Soreness

According to the drug's manufacturer, Lipitor can cause serious muscle problems that can lead to kidney problems, including kidney failure. If you begin to develop muscle weakness, pain or soreness contact your physician. Very rarely, statins can cause life-threatening muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis, which can cause liver damage, kidney failure and death, the Mayo Clinic reports. Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include severe muscle pain and darkened or cola-colored urine.

Allergic Reaction

In rare cases, Lipitor may cause a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include rash, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat that can lead to difficulty in breathing or swallowing. Seek emergency medical attention.
