4 Ways to Do Activities for the Elderly

1. Offer to Help With Everyday Activities

Elderly people, especially those who live away from their families, may have trouble with domestic activities such as mowing the lawn, cleaning the home or shopping for groceries. If you know a senior who doesn't have any specialized care arranged, you can help by simply stopping by and offering to help any way you can. This can be as simple as buying their groceries for them as you're shopping for yours, helping them in the garden or taking care of more strenuous activities, including waxing the floors or moving heavy objects.

2. Visit Often

Many elderly people are lonely. They may live away from their families and have little or no contact with other community members. Isolation can lead to depression and may worsen certain medical conditions, so sharing some time with an elderly neighbor may help make his life easier and healthier. If you know the person well, dropping by for a social visit should be no problem. Otherwise, make time to introduce yourself and offer neighborly help, such as bringing meals over once in a while or stopping by for him to pet your dog in your daily walk.

3. Offer a Ride

The elderly need medical care more often than younger people. Many, however, no longer drive and may have a hard time paying for taxis, especially if they're living on social security and Medicare. Driving them to medical appointments once in a while can make a big difference in their budget and also ease some of the anxiety of doctor visits.

4. Don't Forget Special Occasions

Christmas, birthdays and other special occasions are difficult for the elderly, especially for those who live alone. Something as simple as sending a Christmas card can brighten their day. Better yet, bring over some holiday cookies or even invite them to share your family's celebration.
