Calluses are hardened skin developed when your skin comes in frequent contact with an object or surface. The callus is developed by your skin to prevent it from injury when contacting the surface. The most common places to develop a callus are on your hands and feet. You are likely to handle objects in the same manner repeatedly and use the same walking and running motions, exposing your feet to the fit of your shoes in the same locations. While calluses are painless, harmless and usually appear for a good reason, there are simple ways to remove them if you want to.

Step 1

Place a soft pad over the callus, or wear clothing to protect the callus from wear when you are active. A soft pad made of silicone, cotton or gauze is likely to be effective at protecting your callus from further wear and tear. The less friction and resistance the callus faces, the faster it will diminish and disappear.

Step 2

Stop the habit or habitual motion that created the callus, if covering the callous is not an option.

Step 3

Soak your callus in Epsom salts or saltwater for at least 20 minutes at a time, as advised by MorphemeRemedies.com. This will accelerate the reduction of your callus.

Step 4

Use a pumice stone to sand down the callus. These stones can be purchased at department stores and slowly wear away the callus without causing pain or injury. Pumice stones also allow you to remove only part of the callus instead of the entire thing--you can shave off some of the thicker parts of the callus but leave the formation to protect your skin and flesh from injury.

Step 5

Soak your callus in chamomile tea for at least 30 minutes. Then rub your feet with a towel or brush to remove the softened, loose skin forming your callus.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have a callus, take time to figure out what it's purpose is before removing it. If you get rid of a callus that is protecting your skin from damage, you could end up with very painful blisters on your exposed skin.
